What is an Invisible UV Barcode Scanner?
An Invisible UV Barcode Scanner is a specialized barcode scanner designed for verification, anti-counterfeit, and internal control applications where barcodes must remain invisible under normal lighting conditions.
It uses a 365 nm UV LED light source to detect UV-printed barcodes for secure authentication, internal tracking, and process validation, while also supporting standard printed barcodes within the same workflow.
Key Capabilities
-
Detects UV-invisible barcodes using a 365 nm UV LED
-
Reads 1D barcodes, 2D barcodes, QR codes, and Data Matrix
-
Supports both UV QR code and regular printed QR barcodes without switching devices
-
Uses a USB interface for easy integration with PCs and industrial systems
Common Use Cases
-
Anti-counterfeit verification and brand protection
-
Internal authentication and validation
-
Factory-internal production tracking and process control
-
Quality control and spot-check inspections
This scanner is optimized for reliability and reading accuracy, making it suitable for controlled verification and internal management tasks rather than high-speed or high-volume scanning.
Good vs. Poor UV Barcode Print Quality
Under 365 nm UV Light

Under a 365 nm UV light source, the readability of a UV barcode depends heavily on print contrast and dot definition.
-
Well-printed UV barcodes show clear contrast between the barcode pattern and the background.
Individual dots or cells are well separated, allowing the barcode scanner to capture sufficient grayscale difference for decoding. -
Poorly printed UV barcodes appear faint and low-contrast under UV illumination.
The barcode pattern blends into the background, making it difficult for the scanner’s image sensor to distinguish the barcode structure from noise. -
When the UV response of the ink is too weak, or the printing process causes blurred or merged dots, the effective contrast drops below the scanner’s decoding threshold.
In such cases, even a high-performance UV barcode scanner cannot compensate for inadequate print quality.
The CM-2D202UV invisible UV barcode scanner uses a 365 nm UV LED light source, which is the most commonly used wavelength for reading UV fluorescent barcodes.
Before using a UV barcode scanner, it is essential to confirm that your UV barcode appears clear and bright under a 365 nm UV light. (For reference, most UV nail lamps used for gel manicures also operate at 365 nm.)
UV Barcode Print Quality Matters More Than the Scanner
In most cases, UV barcode readability issues are caused by barcode print quality rather than the scanner itself.
To ensure reliable scanning performance, please carefully inspect the quality of your UV barcodes:
-
The fluorescent substance in the UV ink must be sufficient to produce a clear contrast under UV LED light. ( above photo left side , the right side is not clear under the 365nm UV light )
-
Prolonged exposure to sunlight or long-term storage may cause the fluorescent material to degrade, resulting in a very dim UV barcode.
In such cases, the barcode may become difficult or impossible to read.
Recommended UV Barcode Types and Printing Guidelines
For better readability, we recommend using Data Matrix or QR code formats for UV barcodes. When printing UV barcodes, please note the following guidelines:
-
Avoid excessive ink that causes dots or modules to merge together.
-
Maintain a barcode size of at least 10 × 10 mm if possible.
-
Keep encoded content concise; no more than 20 alphanumeric characters is recommended ( supposed the barcode size is 10 x 10 mm, the bigger barcode size, the more data digits is allowed ).
These factors significantly improve the success rate of UV barcode scanning.
About UV Barcode

UV Barcode
Under 365nm UV light
The image above shows a well-printed UV barcode producing a clear fluorescent image when scanned by our UV barcode scanner.

UV Barcode
UV barcode as seen by the CMOS sensor
This is a CMOS sensor image of the UV barcode under UV LED illumination.
The UV barcode is decoded based on reflected / fluorescent intensity, appearing as a reverse-contrast (light-on-dark) barcode to the scanner.

UV Barcode
Suitable Barcode Size
For UV QR codes and Data Matrix codes, a minimum size of 10 × 10 mm is recommended.
In the example above, the 5 × 5 mm UV QR code shows reduced decoding performance, which may also affect reading speed.
Recommended Materials for UV Barcode Printing

📘 UV Barcode Printing Material Guidelines
UV barcodes achieve the most reliable decoding performance when printed on smooth, non-reflective surfaces. Proper material selection plays a critical role in ensuring stable UV reflection and consistent barcode contrast under UV illumination.
✅ Recommended Materials
UV barcodes are best printed on materials with smooth and matte surfaces, such as:
-
Paper
-
Paper cups
-
Plastic bags
-
Smooth plastic surfaces with low gloss
These materials provide uniform UV reflection, allowing the barcode scanner’s CMOS sensor to capture clear fluorescent contrast for fast and reliable decoding.
❌ Materials Not Recommended for UV Barcode Printing
a) Uneven or textured surfaces
Materials with rough, uneven, or patterned surfaces can distort barcode geometry and reduce decoding reliability, including:
-
Fabric materials (especially coarse fabrics such as tweed or burlap)
-
Rough textile surfaces
-
Stone or textured construction materials
-
Surfaces with heavy patterns or embossed textures
b) Reflective surfaces
Highly reflective materials can cause glare and unstable UV reflection, which interferes with barcode detection, such as:
-
Metal sheets
-
Foil materials
-
Highly polished or mirror-like surfaces
🔍 Summary
For optimal UV barcode performance, it is strongly recommended to use smooth, non-reflective materials.
Avoid textured or reflective surfaces, as they may significantly reduce decoding stability and scanning speed.
