What's the UV/IR Barcode Scan engine?
This is a barcode scan engine architecture specifically designed to directly power and control external add-on illumination boards, such as infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) LED modules.
Unlike conventional designs that require an additional main board to distribute power and manage control signals, CM-2D313 barcode scan engine integrates the light source power supply and on/off control within the scan engine itself.
This allows the external light source to operate in full synchronization with the scan engine without additional trigger circuits or signal routing.
By eliminating the need for a separate main board, the CM-2D313 architecture significantly reduces system complexity, PCB size, and bill of materials (BOM) cost, while simplifying mechanical integration and overall system design.

In most conventional designs, adding a UV LED light source requires an additional main board to supply power and handle trigger signals. This is because typical barcode scan modules are not originally designed with a dedicated interface for add-on light source boards.
As a result, power lines and trigger signals must be routed from the scan engine to the main board, increasing system complexity, PCB size, and component count. The CM-2D313 is designed differently.
From the initial architecture stage, the CM-2D313 integrates dedicated power and control support for external add-on light source boards. This allows UV or infrared LED boards to be connected directly to the scan engine and powered by it, with light on/off behavior automatically synchronized with scan engine operation—without the need for an additional main board.
CM-2D313 vs Traditional Architecture

The add-on UV LED board and IR board are optional. Please clearly specify your selection when placing the order.
About Invisible Barcodes

UV Barcode vs. IR Barcode Comparison
While both UV and IR barcodes serve invisible marking purposes, they differ in durability and material compatibility.
UV Barcode Characteristics
-
Produces a fluorescent effect under UV illumination
-
Fluorescence intensity may decrease over time
-
Prolonged sunlight or UV exposure can accelerate fading
-
Not suitable for reflective surfaces, such as laser labels, due to strong light reflection and noise
IR Barcode Characteristics
-
No fluorescence degradation over time
-
More stable under long-term use and environmental exposure
-
Suitable for reflective materials, including laser labels
-
Requires an IR-capable imaging sensor for detection
Shared Limitations
-
Both UV and IR barcodes are not suitable for uneven or textured surfaces
-
Rough or embossed materials can distort barcode geometry
-
Surface height variations may deform module proportions, leading to unreliable decoding or read failure

UV vs. IR Barcode Imaging Characteristics
UV barcodes are typically rendered as inverted images on CMOS sensors, appearing as white bars on a dark background due to UV fluorescence.
In contrast, IR barcodes are usually captured as normal images, showing dark bars on a light background.

Under UV LED illumination, UV barcodes are visually observable.
In contrast, IR barcodes remain invisible to the human eye even under infrared light, but can be reliably detected and decoded by IR barcode scanners.
Materials for Invisible Barcode Printing

📘 Invisible Barcode Printing Material Guidelines
Invisible barcodes achieve the most reliable decoding performance when printed on smooth, surfaces. Proper material selection plays a critical role in ensuring stable UV reflection and consistent barcode contrast under UV illumination ( same as IR ) .
